IUP Paid Summer Program to Learn Chinese

IUP is offering a unique opportunity this summer for Computer Science/Cybersecurity students from across the nation interested in learning the Chinese language and exploring the ample opportunities such skill can give them upon graduation. We are offering a paid summer program that will teach Chinese to its participants. Program highlights are given below. If you are interested, you are encouraged to complete and submit an application very soon. Please email chinese-immersion-program@iup.edu if you have any questions. Program details: 

  1. A stipend of $6,000 for program and follow-up activity completion.
  2. The program is entirely free for participants, including lodging, travel, and meals.
  3. Application deadline is November 17, 2023.
  4. The 10-week summer program includes online and face-to-face instructions.
  5. Participants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
  6. Fun and exciting cultural activities and experiences.
  7. The program targets current sophomore and junior students but interested freshmen are also encouraged to apply.
  8. Attendance of a conference in Maryland in which all participants will be introduced to various cybersecurity careers requiring proficiency in language and have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the DoD and other federal partner organizations.

Federal Workforce Information Session and USAJobs Primer

Tim Dauk will be on campus on Tuesday, October 10th to present on how to apply for a job in technology in the Federal Government. The presentation will be held in the Wheatley Atrium from 4:30 – 5:15. Information on the presentation and speaker is listed below. Students will be awarded 1 hour of SET credit. Pizza will be served. 

Abstract:  Applying for positions in the Federal Government can be quite different from applying for private sector jobs. This session will go over some of the differences. Benefits and position requirements will be discussed.  A brief tour and familiarization with USAjobs.gov will be provided.  Finally, time will be reserved for questions and answers.

Bio: Tim Dauk joined the PA Air National Guard in 2002 as an aircraft maintainer, specializing in RF systems, such as radios and navigational aids.  He became a federal employee in August 2006 doing the same.  He then moved to Quality Assurance in maintenance.  Currently, he fills the role as an Information Systems Security Manager.  His duties include vulnerability scanning, risk management, communications security, and emissions security.  Tim currently has a Security + certification, and is working toward CISSP and CAP certifications. Tim is a recent graduate from RMU earning a B.S. Digital Forensics & Cyber Security in May 2022. 

Career Fair on September 19th and “Prepare for the Fair” with a Smoothie Truck on September 7th

Start your semester off by attending the Fall 2023 Career Fair! There is also a “Prepare for the Fair” event to help with resumes, tips for talking to employers, and more. There will be a smoothie truck with free smoothies at the prep event! Many top IT employers in the area will be in attendance at the fair on September 19.

20-Year Club Annual Scholarship

The 20-Year Club Annual Scholarship is a one-time award of $3,600 which will be applied toward tuition and books during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Eligibility

  • Full-time undergraduate student enrolled at RMU 
  • Minimum 60 credits (at least 30 earned at RMU) as of 1/1/23; Maximum 90 credits as of 1/1/23
  • Minimum GPA = 3.5

Note: full institutional tuition scholarship recipients are not eligible.  Also, previous winners of the 20-Year Club scholarship are not eligible.

The scholarship winner will be selected based upon a blind review of applications by the 20-Year Scholarship Club Committee.  Committee members will review the application and the required essay to determine the winner.
