Dr. G. Alan Davis, Professor of Computer and Information Systems, Dr. Adam Sullivan, Manager, Instructional Design and Faculty Support Services, and Dr. John Stewart, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Systems (not pictured), were honored for excellence in research at the 58th Annual International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS) conference in Clearwater, FL.
On October 5, 2018, Dr. Davis, Dr. Sullivan, and Dr. Stewart received the Best Paper Award in the Pedagogy category, for their paper titled EdTech Effectiveness: Using Screencasts to Increase Learning Outcomes in Information Systems Curricula.
Academic research papers accepted and presented at the IACIS conference are published in the Issues in Information Systems (IIS) journal, a double-blind refereed, serial publication (ISSN 1529-7314). IIS publishes research in both practice and pedagogical topics focused on the field of information systems.

Congratulations to Dr. Ping Wang!
Dr. Ping Wang has received a grant funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through a partnership with CyberWatch West and Whatcom Community College for participation in the Application Assistance Program (AAP) for National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE). The NSF funding, which covers mentoring, stipends, and travel support, is to assist Dr. Wang in the application for RMU to become a national CAE-CDE designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The grant is valued at $10,000.
Congratulations to Dr. Robert Skovira, who was honored with a Greater Pittsburgh Community Media Award. Dr. Skovira received an award for MCA-TV Best Informative Program on October 19, 2017. Moon Community Access Television (MCA-TV) is a center for the production and distribution of public access, educational, and governmental programming over the cable system serving Moon Township.
This week, the CIS Department congratulates Dr. Charles Woratschek who was inducted as an AITP-EDSIG Fellow at the annual EDSIG Conference for Information Systems and Computing. AITP-EDSIG Fellows are inducted in honor of their long-term, meaningful, and effective support of AITP-EDSIG in its mission to improve information systems (IS) education and foster the careers of IS faculty.
Dr. Woratschek is Professor Emeritus of Computer and Information Systems at Robert Morris University. His career in teaching began in middle school science where he taught for four years. He took a leave of absence in his fifth year to pursue a Master’s Degree in Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh and never looked back. Point Park University hired him as an adjunct faculty in 1982 to teach courses in FORTRAN, data communications, and database. He remained in that position for six years. Robert Morris University hired him full time in 1983 to teach COBOL and Introduction to Computing. During his 33 years at Robert Morris University he went on to teach a variety of courses in programming languages, human computer interaction, database management systems, operating systems, and data warehouse. His first EDSIG conference was in San Antonio, Texas in 1998. Since then he has served as program co-chair, papers co-chair, new member orientation co-chair, and on the editorial board for the Journal of Information Systems Education. Dr. Woratschek has a B.S., M.S.I.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and a M.S.Ed. from Duquesne University.

RMU’s Bachelor of Science in Cyber Forensics and Information Security ranked in the top 15 Best Information Systems Security Bachelor’s Online. The BS in Cyber Forensics and Information Security combines the disciplines of technology, business, organizational behavior, and law.
RMU’s Master of Science in Cyber Security and Information Assurance degree program prepares information systems and technology professionals to recognize and combat information systems threats and vulnerabilities. The MS in Cyber Security and Information Asssurance ranked in the top 30 Best I.T. Systems Security Master’s Online.
CollegeChoice also noted, “Even though Robert Morris University’s enrollment is just around 5,000 students, its online capabilities have made a big impression in the world of rankings. In US News & World Report’s ‘Best Online Universities of 2017,’ RMU ranked in the top 10 percent in the nation. Within the state of Pennsylvania, Educemic named it the 3rd Top Pennsylvania Online School.”
Cyber security consulting firm Paraben has named Robert Morris University the “Cyber School of the Future 2017“. Paraben CEO Amber Schroader honored RMU with the award at the Paraben Forensic Innovations Conference. The conference was a private industry and law enforcement symposium held at the Moon Township campus in August.
Schroader singled out Dr. Karen Paullet, associate professor of computer and information systems, for her work in mobile forensics in the classroom and National Science Foundation-funded workshops.
Also announced at the conference was the newly launched RMU Center for Cyber Research and Training. The center offers customized training workshops on maintaining network security and deterring and detecting unauthorized access. It also shares techniques for gathering evidence from mobile devices for law enforcement investigations, and will conduct research in cyber security, cyber forensics, and other cyber-related topics.

On Tuesday, April 18th at the Student Excellence Awards, the Top Secret Colonials was awarded the Revolution Portal of the Year. The organization received a check for $200. TSC received the award because it was the most active organization on OrgSync.
OrgSync is a Campus Engagement Network that connects students to organizations, programs, and departments on campus in a private online community. This is the first year that Robert Morris University has used OrgSync for its student organizations and activities.

Dr. Wenli Wang of the Computer and Information Systems Department received the Best Paper Award for Research, Honorable Mention, for her research paper A Learning Module for Advanced Cryptology at the 56th Annual International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS) conference, held October 5 – October 8, 2016 in Nashville, TN.
