Work-Study Opportunity: WeBWorK System Administrator and Support

There is a current opening for a work-study position at RMU:  WeBWorK System Administrator and Support.  The position would require working with an Amazon Server running a mathematics software program which needs installed and maintained.  Installation requires some Perl scripting (there are some online tutorials to help).  Linux, Apache, Perl, and shell scripting experience would be a plus.

Job Description/Duties:  
This NSF-grant-funded position will assist with the RMU WeBWorK site.  WeBWorK is an open source on-line homework system for math classes that provides immediate feedback to student users.  This position will be responsible for updating and maintaining the WeBWorK site on the Amazon Web Server for RMU. The job will require assisting faculty in developing and setting up WeBWorK courses content, alpha-testing new WeBWorK course content, and other related duties.

IT Internship at Red Valve, Co.

Red Valve Co., Inc. is seeking an IT intern beginning in the Fall 2015 semester.  The IT intern will be responsible for performing a variety of maintenance, installation and training tasks to help meet end user requirements.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Respond to assigned help desk tickets and provide solutions for reported end user problems.
Walk customers through problem solving process.
Follow up with customers, provide feedback and see problems through to resolution.
Properly escalate unresolved queries to the next level of support.
Document the details related to a problem and resolution appropriately.
Responsible for configuration and deployment of new equipment.
Work with the IT group on help desk requests and IT project management.
Assist with standardizing help desk requests.
Assist with individual and group updates of Red Valve Company’s active directory infrastructure.
Assist with inventory updates for Red Valve Company’s environments and infrastructure.
LAN/WAN infrastructure design and implementation.
Detailed orientated with the ability to multi-task.
Participate on team projects, complete tasks and ensure they are completed in a timely manner and to specifications.
Preserve and grow your knowledge of help desk procedures, products and services.
Assist with general administrative duties and projects as needed.

Qualifications:

Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field.
Must have successfully completed first 3 years of program.
Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent analytical skills.
Ability to excel in a team environment.

The UPMC Information Systems Division Summer Associates Program is now accepting applications for internships during the summer of 2016.  This is a full-time, 11 week, paid internship program starting at the end of May 2016 and ending in mid-August that combines real work experience with networking opportunities, executive exposure, and community service.

Participants are typically placed within our systems and data management, infrastructure, health information management, project management, coding and testing, security, architecture, or voice and data communicate areas.

Qualifications:

RMU receives NSF Grant for Mobile Security Program

Robert Morris University recently received a $224,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to aid in the development of a Mobile Forensics and Security certificate program at RMU that will focus on teaching students to analyze and secure mobile devices and networks against cybercrime.  The grant will also fund a “train the trainer” initiative in order to train information systems faculty at other institutions.  RMU will partner with Middle Georgia State University, the Community College of Beaver County, and the Southeastern Advanced Cybersecurity Education Consortium to train 40 faculty members to teach the mobile security certificate program to their own students.

Work on the mobile security grant project begins this fall.  Dr. Karen Paullet, Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Systems, is directing the grant project at RMU assisted by Dr. Jamie Pinchot, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Systems, and Dr. Sushma Mishra, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Systems.  Dr. Fred Kohun, University Professor of Computer and Information Systems, will also be consulting on the project.

Seeking CIS Department Blog Writer/Assistant

The CIS department is currently seeking a CIS Department Blog Writer/Assistant.  This will be a paid work-study position ($9/hour up to 5 hours per week) that will be available for the full academic year 2015-2016.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit and/or write blog articles on topics assigned by the faculty editor in a timely manner
  • Work with members of the CIS department and RMU community to discover topics and issues for the blog and follow up on those topics in future blog posts
  • Monitor IT-related news outlets to discover topics and issues appropriate for the blog and follow up by writing blog posts
  • Manage and edit media related to blog posts (images, video)
  • Assist the faculty editor with management of the blog sidebar items/links and technical features in WordPress

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills
  • Enthusiasm for IT-related topics
  • Ability to manage tasks and time effectively
  • Skills in writing for the Web, editing images, editing video, and/or WordPress is a plus.
