RMU receives NSF Grant for Mobile Security Program

Robert Morris University recently received a $224,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to aid in the development of a Mobile Forensics and Security certificate program at RMU that will focus on teaching students to analyze and secure mobile devices and networks against cybercrime.  The grant will also fund a “train the trainer” initiative in order to train information systems faculty at other institutions.  RMU will partner with Middle Georgia State University, the Community College of Beaver County, and the Southeastern Advanced Cybersecurity Education Consortium to train 40 faculty members to teach the mobile security certificate program to their own students.

Work on the mobile security grant project begins this fall.  Dr. Karen Paullet, Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Systems, is directing the grant project at RMU assisted by Dr. Jamie Pinchot, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Systems, and Dr. Sushma Mishra, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Systems.  Dr. Fred Kohun, University Professor of Computer and Information Systems, will also be consulting on the project.

New Degree Names: Data Analytics

The CIS Department is very proud to announce that it sought and received approval to change the name of three of its degree programs.  Starting in Fall 2015, the B.S. in Competitive Intelligence Systems and M.S. in Competitive Intelligence Systems will be known, respectively, as the B.S. in Data Analytics, and the M.S. in Data Analytics.  In addition, the fully-online M.S. in Competitive Intelligence Systems degree program will also be changed to the M.S. in Data Analytics.

In order to be consistent with the degree name changes, INFS3510 Competitive Intelligence will be changed to INFS3510 Intro to Data Analytics and INFS6510 Competitive Intelligence will be changed to INFS6510 Intro to Data Analytics.

The curricula of all three programs will remain exactly the same.

The CIS Department did extensive research of the Business Intelligence/Business Analytics field and feels that these updated program names are more consistent with industry and will allow our graduates to be more marketable and competitive in their career search.

Would you like to contribute to the CIS blog?

The CIS Department is working to make this blog a useful communication tool for all students in our department, as well as a CIS community forum for students, faculty, and alumni.  We are looking for a few more student writers to participate in writing for the blog.

Opportunities can include simple editing work to publicize upcoming opportunities and events, but we are also looking for students who would like to write original articles on IT-related topics and current events of interest to them, at the rate of approximately 1-2 articles per month.  We would like to make this blog a place where students in the department can look for new information related to the field, and perhaps even discuss some of the articles and concepts together as a community.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Dr. Jamie Pinchot at your earliest convenience (pinchot@rmu.edu).  Blog writers are eligible to earn SET credit for this work.
