Top Secret Colonials October Update

I hope all is well with everyone as we continue to move deeper into the semester.  Here are just a few updates with the club.

Everyone please remember to drop off jars of peanut butter and jelly in order to help the us give back.  Drop-off boxes are located near the admissions office, in Romo’s, and right outside of Dr. Paullet’s office.

In addition, the Top Secret Colonials are going to be hosting a 12-Hour Gaming Charity Marathon sometime in October.  The details on when and where are still being worked out, so be aware of updates happening soon.  If you are interested, please email jtwst256@mail.rmu.edu.

Also, please be aware of the cyber security awareness tips being posted throughout the month.  Continue to email ideas as you think of them.

Last, if you missed any of the meetings regarding the D.C. National Security Seminar Trip and you’re interested in going, please schedule a meeting with Dr. Paullet.

Thanks, and enjoy the rest of Cyber Security Awareness Month!

On Thursday, September 24, the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh kicks off its three-part fall series on cybersecurity with an illuminating look at cyber warfare in a program entitled: Will the Next World War Start in Cyber Space? P. W. Singer, recently named one of the 10 most influential voices in the world on cybersecurity, will explore the hot button issue of state-sponsored cyber attacks.

Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 2.24.25 PMSinger, a Strategist and Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, was recently described by The Wall Street Journal as “one of Washington’s pre-eminent futurists.”  His book, Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know, has been added to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army professional reading lists, and his first work of fiction, Ghost Fleet: A Novel of the Next World War, debuted to rave reviews this summer.

MUST READ Article on Cybersecurity

Student Editorial

I hope everyone’s summer has gone well so far, and I hope that everyone is almost ready for another great school year as August nears. The article below is by far one of the best articles I’ve seen/read on cybersecurity. With the pool of both the good and bad guys involved with cybersecurity only continuing to grow, the battle to protect and damage critical infrastructure will continue to rage on. Shawn Henry, current president of CrowdStrike Services and former FBI Assistant Director, discusses how cyber adversaries are adapting and finding new ways to attack. In addition, he discusses the growing issue with China continuing to illegally access the U.S.’s private data, and how our nation must provide a better response to these incidents.  In addition, a few other topics in cybersecurity are discussed.  All in all, this blog post cannot give you all of the detail provided by this marvelous article. Please take the time to read it.
